Description
Very high resolution image
The boundary of the adjacent, young star-forming area NGC 3324 in the Carina Nebula is what appears to be rocky mountains on a moonlit night. This image of the star birth process was captured in infrared light by the Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) on NASA's James Webb Space Telescope.
The area, known as the Cosmic Cliffs, is actually the edge of a massive, gaseous cavity within NGC 3324, which is located around 7,600 light-years away. Intense ultraviolet radiation and stellar winds from extremely large, hot, young stars located in the heart of the bubble, above the region visible in this view, have carved the cavernous area from the nebula. These stars' high-energy radiation is steadily eroding away the nebula's wall, molding it.
With its sharp resolution and unmatched sensitivity, NIRCam reveals a large number of background galaxies as well as hundreds of previously unknown stars. The following paragraphs list a few of this image's standout elements.
— Due to intense UV light, the "steam" that seems to erupt from the celestial "mountains" is actually hot, ionized gas and heated dust streaming away from the nebula.
--- Dramatic pillars rise above the incandescent wall of gas, fending off the nascent stars' scorching ultraviolet radiation.
— The stellar winds and strong radiation of young stars are blowing bubbles and cavities.
—Golden protostellar jets and outflows blast from dust-covered, developing stars.
— A "blow-out" that spews gas and dust into the interstellar medium occurs in the top-center of the ridge.
— A strange "arch" that resembles a cylinder bent upside down emerges.
