Description
A massive stone sculpture of a foot rests on an ornate pedestal against an old brick wall with an arched window. The window is secured with iron bars, and architectural elements such as columns are visible nearby.
A colossal stone head, along with large fragments of a hand and limb, is displayed against an ancient architectural backdrop, giving a sense of historical grandeur. The monochromatic setting highlights the intricate details of the stonework.
The Colossus of Constantine, also known as the Statua Colossale di Costantino I in Italian, is an enormous, life-size, acrolithic statue from the early fourth century that was commissioned by Constantine the Great, a Roman emperor who lived from 280 to 337. It was originally located in the west apse of the Basilica of Maxentius on the Via Sacra, close to the Forum Romanum in Rome. The Palazzo dei Conservatori courtyard, which is now a part of the Capitoline Museums, is home to the remaining pieces of the Colossus. It is located on the Capitoline Hill, above the west end of the Forum.
The enormous head is carved in the customary, abstract Constantinian style ('hieratic emperor style') of late Roman portrait statues, yet the rest of the body is realistic, down to calloused toes and bulging forearm veins. The head's larger-than-life-size eyes, which look toward eternity from a resolutely impersonal, frontal face, may have been intended to symbolize the Emperor's transcendence of his otherworldly essence over the human realm. The treatment of the head demonstrates a fusion of individualized portraiture: the aquiline nose, deep jaw, and strong chin that characterize all portraits of Constantine, with late Roman portraiture tendencies that emphasize symbolism and abstraction over detail.
Constantine is shown in unapproachable majesty in this large public work, like an effigy of a god, despite the fact that he is meant to symbolize the Christian deity.
