Description
A stunning cathedral with two towering spires stands majestically against a clear sky. The elaborate stonework and architectural symmetry are striking.
The cathedral was built in the Norman architectural style between 1131 and 1240, after the Normans invaded Sicily in 1091. According to legend, the structure was built in response to a pledge made to the Holy Saviour by King of Sicily, Roger II, after he fled from a storm and landed on the city's shore. The structure has a fortress-like appearance and dominates the skyline of the adjacent medieval town from a distance.
It made a strong statement about the Norman presence.
