Description
Holy family in black and white photo
A nativity scene is an exhibition of artifacts that depict Jesus' birth in the Christian religion. It is also referred to as a manger scene, crib, crèche, presepio or presepe, or Bethlehem, and is most common around Christmas time. Although the phrase "nativity scene" can refer to any artistic depiction of the Nativity of Jesus, it also has a more specific meaning that refers to seasonal displays that either use model figures in a setting or live-action reenactments known as "living nativity scenes" (tableau vivant) that include both people and animals. Nativity scenes feature figurines of the young Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, who is Mary's husband.
The first known nativity scene was discovered in Saint Valentine's early Christian catacomb. It dates back to 380 A.D.
During the Christmas season, static nativity scenes, which include figures of the baby Jesus laying in a manger, Mary, and Joseph, may be built indoors or outside. Angels, shepherds, and numerous animals might be included in the tableau as additional individuals.
Nativity scenes in homes are often put away after Christmas or soon after, but in churches, they typically stay on display until the feast of the Baptism of the Lord.
