Description
The Basilica of Saint Mary Major
is the only patriarchal basilica of the four in Rome to have preserved its paleochristian structures.
Located on the Esquiline Hill, Santa Maria Maggiore was founded in 432, just after the Council of Ephesus in 431
In front of the splendid Basilica, in the centre of the square of the same name, stands the imposing column called "della Pace" (Column of Peace).
The 14-metre-high marble column, which stands in front of the church, comes from the Basilica of Maxentius. It was set up here in 1614, at the behest of Pope Paul V
A tall, ornate column stands prominently in front of a historic building with intricate architectural details. A large bell tower rises in the background, set against a clear sky.
