We have known some celestial formations for millennia as we gaze up at the starry sky. Among the constellations that have shaped humans throughout history and across cultural boundaries is the Pleiades, a tiny cluster of brilliant stars sometimes referred to as the Seven Sisters. But our perception of them from Earth may be but a small portion of a much larger reality.
The Pleiades, as we know them, are actually only the visible center of a much larger star family, according to astronomers at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. They found thousands of previously undetectable stars strewn around the sky by merging data from NASA's TESS satellite with the European Space Agency's Gaia space observatory. Known as the Great Pleiades Complex, this enlarged structure would cover an area twenty times more than what scientists had previously calculated.
