Description

The Fontana dell'Acqua Felice, popularly known as the Fountain of Moses, is a colossal fountain that can be found in Rome's Quirinale neighborhood. It served as the finish line for the Pope Sixtus V-restored Acqua Felice Aqueduct. Built between 1585 and 1588, it was Domenico Fontana's design.
This was the fountain which inspired Fontana dell'Acqua Paola, built 1612 by Giovanni Fontana, who was the brother of Domenico. It is interesting to see both fountains and compare.

Two lions from Egypt adorned the fountain, called Leoni di Nectanebo, dated between 360-343BC. Pope Gregory XVI had copies made by Adamo Tadolini in 1839, (the fountain has four lions). The two original lions were relocated to the Vatican Cortile della Pigna/Pine Cone Courtyard, they now flank a fountain at the base of the large pine cone sculpture.
