Description
Fontana di Trevi in Rome, Italy
The Trevi Fountain, Rome's most famous symbol, has become one of the city's must-see attractions, not just for its beauty, but also for its intriguing history. It is especially revered in Fellini's film "La Dolce Vita," and it attracts hundreds of tourists every day, all eager to throw a penny into its priceless basin.
Despite the fact that it was built later than most other fountains in Rome, during the height of the Rococo period, the fountain has ancient origins. It was really accomplished alongside the Aqueduct of the Virgin, which was completed during the reign of Emperor Augustus and is, in part, the only still functional Roman Aqueduct of the Roman Empire! A tale, as is often the case in the Eternal City, explains its origin.
It is told that one day, when the heroic general Agrippa and his men were especially thirsty, they met a young virgin who, as if by magic, caused a spring of clean water to shoot out from the earth. In order to commemorate the exceptional event, Agrippa planned to construct an aqueduct from the spring's location.
The deity Oceanus is shown in the center of the fountain on a chariot drawn by winged horses and followed by Tritons. One horse is agitated, while the other is peaceful, representing the two sides of the sea, which can be calm or turbulent. The sculptures of Salubrità (Humility) and Abundant (Abundance).
Immediately above the niches, two panels relate the tale of the construction of the Aqueduct of the Virgin: on one side, Agrippa stands beside the soldiers, while on the other, the Virgin points to the source of clean water, alluding to an ancient tradition.
