Description
Spiral Staircase at the exit of the Vatican museums, Vatican City, Rome, Italy
The original staircase was commissioned by Pope Julius II in the early 16th century and designed by the famed Tuscan architect Donato Bramante. The staircase includes herringbone pavement and granite columns along the innermost spirals. It was erected in the shape of a square tower and was intended to connect the Belvedere Palace to the streets of Rome. It also permitted Pope Julius II to ride by carriage straight to his private house. This was made feasible since the original staircase lacked stairs and was more of a paved ramp. Furthermore, this unique architectural masterpiece exhibits the double helix design. This is the most frequent shape we associate with a strand of DNA today.
Naturally, the architect did not draw influence from this because DNA was discovered and studied millennia later. The true motivation for its design was convenience. It let traffic to go up one lane and down the other, ensuring that there were no interruptions. The original staircase is a very exclusive venue that is difficult to access. To see such expert craftsmanship on such an ancient edifice, though, is incredible to say the least.
