Description
Thera (Fira)
City on Santorini - Greece
Fira is the capital of Santorini, a Greek island in the Aegean Sea.
The island was the scene of one of the greatest volcanic eruptions in documented history: the Minoan eruption (sometimes called the Thera eruption) that occurred at the height of Minoan culture around 3,600 years ago. The explosion created a large caldera filled by hundreds of meters thick layers of volcanic ash.
It may have contributed, indirectly, to the fall of the Minoan culture on the island of Crete, 110 km (68 mi ) south, by a colossal tsunami.
Another common theory holds that the eruption of Thera is the root of the Atlantis myth.
