Description
A repeating sign in Sicily may be seen not just in the region's flag but also in textiles, pottery, jewelry, t-shirt, magnets, and postcards. The Trinacria, a three-legged head, may reflect the actual spirit of this enchanted island.
The Gorgon's head, one of the three monstrous sisters of Greek mythology (specifically, Medusa, Steno, and Euryale, daughters of Phorcus and Ceto, two sea gods capable of terrifying anyone who looked into their eyes), radiates three legs bent from her hair, made from snakes intertwined with ears of corn.
Some coins discovered in Asia Minor dating from the 6th and 4th centuries B.C. attest to the symbol's religious significance, which is tied to the sun deity and his triple portrayal of the seasons spring, summer, and winter.
There is therefore a tight tie between Trinacria and ancient Greece: Spartan soldiers used the distinctive bent leg as a metaphor for strength, and Homer mentions Thrinakie (from thrinax, "three-pointed") in the Odyssey, alluding to the form of the island.
Thus, the Greeks are credited with bringing Trinacria to Europe, until we reach Roman times, when this figure loses its religious element and becomes a typical image of Sicily.
